Jaynie and I have always enjoyed messing about in boats. We’ve motored and sailed the Solent extensively, we’ve crossed The Channel a few times, we’ve chartered bareboat in the UK, the Med and the Caribbean, we’ve sailed with friends whenever we could and have even done a bit of racing. But we’ve never had long enough on the water before Sunday afternoon comes around and we have to rush back home for work and school commitments. We feel we’ve never really done more than just play at it… and we want to.
So in 2021 we both left work. I’m calling it an open-ended sabbatical, Jaynie says it’s retirement, but our aim is to sail around the world… why not?
We’re not total tough-nuts though, certainly no longer as youthful and fit as we once were, so we’re not setting-off into the blue totally alone. We’re joining the World ARC 2024, a rally organised by the World Cruising Club for the back-up, expertise and company that they and the other crews will supply.
We’ve also chosen a boat that should give us safe, comfortable and reasonably fast passage. We’re not racing but when there’s 30,000 miles to cover even an extra half knot on our average speed makes a big difference to how long we can stop to explore the places we pass.
And of course we hope to tempt friends and family to join us on board for much of our journey. Prior sailing experience preferred but not essential!
This Website
This website is intended for family and friends to to track our progress and share some of our experiences. We’ll update it whenever time, internet connectivity and the mood-to-blog align. The pages about The Route, The Boat and The Crew are largely static and set the scene. The Blog page is where we’ll post updates and at the end of each blog post there’s a form you can use to add your own comments too (assuming I can make that bit work).
